Who we are

Our Movement

Move Beyond Coal is an unstoppable community movement to solve Australia's biggest contribution to the climate crisis. We are working to protect a liveable world for people and nature everywhere by stopping coal expansion, and phasing out coal by 2030.

With our roots in the #StopAdani movement, we are called to go bigger and broader to answer the scale of Australian coal's unjust contribution to the climate crisis. Together, we are building a big, bold, beautiful, and diverse movement grounded in a commitment to climate justice and First Nations justice.

Only people power can stand up to reckless coal corporations, take on the banks that fund them, and hold our politicians to account. Together, we can, and will, move Australia beyond coal.

Our Principles

1. We stand together for justice

We stand together, acknowledging our different experiences of the climate crisis, in pursuit of a more just world - where lands, waters and homes are protected and communities have the power to determine a flourishing future beyond coal.

We honour and learn from the many frontline communities that, for decades, have resisted the injustices caused by Australian coal corporations.

We commit to show up in solidarity with First Nations people who are leading fights to protect Country and demanding the right to determine what happens on their land.

2. We are people powered

Our power to stand up to the coal billionaires comes from activating our communities, schools, workplaces, places of worship, family and friends to take action together.

We grow our movement by listening to and having conversations with new people; using storytelling, art and music to connect with our communities; regularly taking bold and creative actions together; and by sharing and learning new skills.

3. We are welcoming and inclusive

We welcome people from all walks of life into our movement and create space for people to contribute their own distinct skills, knowledge, experiences, and abilities to our movement.

We recognise that unjust systems mean that many people in our movement continue to experience marginalisation based on race, cultural background, citizenship status, class, sexuality, gender, and disability. We are committed to ongoing learning, self-reflection, and cultural change so that more people feel welcome and supported in our movement. We have zero-tolerance for discrimination.

4. We experiment and learn together

We welcome creative ideas, new ways of doing things, imperfections and experiments to grow our movement and build campaigns that win.

We take the time to debrief our work together and to learn from our successes and mistakes through honest conversations and reflections.

5. We take care of ourselves, each other, and our shared home

We take time to care for the health of our bodies, minds, spirits, our communities and environment to the best of our ability so that we can maintain a strong movement together.

We respect that for each of us this looks different and changes over time.

6. We are non-violent in our actions and words

We are non-violent in our actions and words towards our targets, the community and one another so that we can grow a movement that wins the hearts and minds of the public and welcomes the most people to take part.

7. We are non-partisan

We don’t align ourselves with any particular political party. We are building a broad movement of people from all political persuasions to move Australia beyond coal.

Acknowledgement of Country

Move Beyond Coal acknowledges the original First Nations Custodians of the land on which we work, meet, and play. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture. As the oldest continuous culture in the world, First Nations peoples have cared for Country for tens of thousands of years, and they continue to lead fights to protect their land, water and culture today.

We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and we pay tribute to the decades-long legacy of Aboriginal fights for land rights and against destructive mining projects. In particular, we acknowledge the Wangan and Jagalingou Cultural Custodians’ ongoing opposition to coal mining on their land in Central Qld, and the Gomeroi Traditional custodians’ continuing opposition to coal and gas on their land in NSW.

This land was stolen. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
